Blonde Redhead - Shepherd's Bush Empire, London 29/9/10
3/5

Like other ostensibly 'indie' bands who operate on the peripheries and remain more than happy to dip their toes into other musical waters - Blonde Redhead come recommended to fans of The xx and Dirty Projectors - it's nevertheless hard to dispel the feeling that the New York trio are a band to listen to rather than watch.
Yet though they mainly spend time pushing new album Penny Sparkle, their third for the 4AD label (an appropriate home for a group with so much in common with celebrated 4AD charges Cocteau Twins) Blonde Redhead retain the ability to captivate.
The mesmerising interwoven vocals of Kazu Makino and Amedeo Pace on 'Will There Be Stars' meld Fever Ray's otherworldly experimentation and Thom Yorke's paranoid murmurings, whilst older material such as 'Dr Strangeluv' is equally haunting.
Over the course of an entire headline set, however, and their faraway swashes starts to cloy.
