Avey Tare – Lucky 1 (Paw Tracks)

5/5

By: Samuel Smith

‘Avey Tare, Panda Bear and Geologist’ was the original name of Portner, Lennox, and Weitz’s musical collective, a name under which they released Danse Manatee, a dense, experimental noisescape that soon homogenized and smoothed their original chaos into Animal Collective. After the huge and unexpected success of Merriweather Post Pavilion the trio’s collective output is clearly too much even for the rapid-fire release of the EP that followed said album, resulting in both Panda Bear and Avey Tare sprinting helter skelter to release new material under their individual monikers.

Avey Tare, being the project of David Ponter has still got all the hallmarks of Animal Collective’s later releases, meaty modulating synths, digital punches of compressed reverb and those game-changing-Beach-Boys-emulating reverbed harmonies sung with open mouthed consonants but lacks the crescendo, the drive towards a beaty climbing peak that marked Merriweather Post Pavilion as such a huge progressive leap away from the noise credentials of earlier releases like Here Comes The Indian.

But Poynter has proved the point (chuckle) that direction and convergent assonance don’t have to be linear. The song swells with confidence, and the squelchy splurgh of synthesizers seems enough of a direction in itself. As a forerunner of the imminent full length Down There (coming out on their own Paw Tracks label) it shows huge promise that an excellent pop record is a-coming.
