Anna Calvi Jezebel (Domino)
4/5
By: Charlie Hearn
Anna Calvi’s take on 1950s classic ‘Jezebel’ holds all the unnerving yet beauteous mystique of a David Lynch film. Set to continually galloping drums, Domino Records’ latest starlet provides a thoroughly intriguing take on an age old story that, despite being a cover, seems entirely unique to her, utilising those bafflingly deep vocals to compliment the track’s haunting sparseness and sense of impetuousness.
Anna’s now widely talked about skill with her trademark Telecaster echoes alongside a mesmerising mix of choral adlibs, summoning up an intimate black magic. Calvi’s focus on generating an edgy atmosphere is immediately prevalent as the song abruptly begins to the sound of pounding toms and ethereal harmonies before taking off into another world.
Anna is currently road-testing tracks from her forthcoming album (produced by Rob Ellis), jumping from service station to service station on tour in mainland Europe with Grinderman - could there be a better fit?. Due early next year, it’s a record from a firm Rockfeedback favourite for which we really cannot wait.
