Peter DiStefano - 'Gratitude' (Sanctuary)
3/5
By: Matt Tomiak
Despite resembling another of those insipid cod-jazz crooners on the sleeve, Peter DiStefanio is made of altogether more rock 'n' roll fibre.
The former guitarist in Jane's Addiction leader Perry Farrell's mid-90s project Pornos For Pyros, this is ex-hellraiser DiStefanio's first solo outing, and by Jove, its a mixed old bag.
On 'Gratitude' we find unruly psychedelic guitar-licks that would even impress Dave Navarro, swirling baggy grooves, blissed-out 'Screamadelica'-isms and Beatles-esque pure pop. And that's just the first three tracks. Yowzers.
And there's plenty more tonal shifts left within this uncommonly diverse record: the pensive 'Last Time' apes REM's 'E-Bow The Letter', 'Starry Eyes' is straight outta Air's 'Moon Safari' whilst edgy disco-punk is represented via 'Diminished'. An indulgently accomplished, diverse little treat.
