Deerhoof – The Merry Barracks (ATP)

5/5

By: Charlie Hearn

Their new album Deerhoof Vs. Evil (pictured) isn’t out until the back end of next January, however already the four-piece from San Fransico have already divulged a wonderful statement of intent - if ‘The Merry Barracks’ is but a warning shot, then expect a full on barrage of experimental audio chaos come the New Year.

Driven by the dull hum of a doom-inducing bassline and the edgy undertones of an offbeat guitar, it would appear that evil has the upper hand in this tussle.  It’s almost a minute before Deerhoof get their chance to respond, as the glitchy beast chugs along like a well oiled machine.  It’s Satomi Matsuzaki’s enchanting vocals that provide the reply, reminding us that the song is in fact made by humans and not by a gang of post-apocalyptic robots.

We can’t be sure whether Deerhoof or evil come out on top come the close, but this snippet of the forthcoming battle is strange, brilliant, and has us in a state of can’t bloody wait for that new record.
