James Blake – Limit To Your Love (Atlas)

4/5

By: Charlie Hearn

Something about James Blake’s take on Feist’s ‘Limit To Your Love’ holds far more in the way of emotion than the original, oozing as it does with Blake’s own heartache and disappointment.  Deciding to skip over the somewhat joyous revival that usually occurs towards the end of the song, James instead opts to utilise the bleaker lyrics in a spiralling refrain.

His fine, smooth vocals (this being the first time we’ve ever heard the previously thoroughly instrumentally-minded producer’s voice) accompany warm percussion and looping piano to generate a tragic cacophony.  An unorthodox song structure is employed to break up the repetition, providing a slither of hope in an otherwise sad realisation.

Overall, James’ expertly produced version (go figure) adds a deeper dimension to Feist’s original, outlining perfectly why he’s one of the UK’s brightest new stars.
