Still Flyin’ – Party In Motion EP (Moshi Moshi)

4/5

By: Liane Escorza

My CD player is totally playing up on me, playing Still Flyin’s Party in Motion at random. But rather than finding this utterly frustrating, it almost feels as if it’s meant to be so.

Still Flyin’ are a lo-fi band from San Francisco specialising in twee pop with catchy melodies and experimental electro beats thrown in. It’s fun, fresh, bubbly, quirky and cute.  Potentially disgusting, yes, but on the contrary, Still Flyin’ manage to splash enough meaningful creativity into their work (through playful percussion, thoughtful arrangements and choral harmonies that remain engraved in one’s mind after just one go) to make it worthwhile.

‘Stay Wild, Tokelau’ is a burst of strawberry-flavoured pop that brings a cheeky grin to the faces of all I’ve played it to. ‘Victory’ follows, a nostalgic, 80s-infused serenade with (slightly nerdy) spoken word sections that makes it incredibly cool nevertheless. And then there’s ‘Victory Walker’, something that could have been written in the glorious times of Wham! and Top Gun, infused with The Cure’s hollow bass lines and escalating guitars.

Overall, the Party in Motion package is alluring, surprising, light-hearted and syrupy to just the right extent. Still Flyin’ know how to party in sweet, sweet style.
