Girls – Heartbreaker (True Panther Sounds)

3/5

By: Charlie Hearn

‘Heartbreaker’ the latest in a consistent stream of pretty reasonable output by San Francisco outfit Girls. The band were founded by lead singer Christopher Owens, a former member of the Children Of God cult - a religious movement that shaped Owens’ musical influences (or lack of them) through a strict censorship policy. He described their debut album as an “overflow of expression” and all subsequent releases seem to maintain this easy going air of freedom that conjures up imagery of tracing a stretch American coastline in a bright red convertible.

However, despite this elusive element of freedom that the band seem to capture so well, comeback tune ‘Heartbreaker’ is set to a frustratingly rigid structure. You’re just begging for it to wind off into a ridiculously complex guitar solo before returning to the road and shooting off into the distance. It tries, but it doesn’t quite succeed, and by the end of it you’re left feeling like you’ve done a lot of driving without having arrived at anywhere significant.
