Daft Punk Derezzed (Virgin)
3/5

Riding the wave of France’s dance music movement in the late 90’s with their classic Homework, Daft Punk really came into their own at the start of the noughties when their second studio album Discovery received massive commercial acclaim, propelled by hit singles and dancefloor favourites like ‘One More Time’. Having hit a chord with the masses, despite being less successful in terms of units shifted, following outing Human After All stuck to a similar formula, with stand out tracks like ‘Robot Rock’ and ‘Technologic’ cementing the French duo’s unique brand of electronica as a force to be reckoned with amongst dance music’s heavy weights.
‘Derezzed’ is a teaser taken from the pair’s 24-track score to the sci-fi epic Tron:Legacy that comes out later this year. Creatively, this doesn’t stray too far from the path they already blazed either, featuring all the key elements that you would expect from a Daft Punk single. As such, you also get the impression that the song isn’t the strongest string in their bow – it feels like ‘Derezzed’ is more than likely being used as a tester to establish how relevant the pair’s supposedly timeless sound still is. However, having said all that, my goodness does it have attitude, and the same slick European sense of cool that featured in abundance on all their previous smash singles. Nobody does it quite as well as them, that’s still true – even if they’ve been doing it the same way for a fair while now.
