Crystal Castles Not In Love (feat. Robert Smith) (Polydor)
5/5
By: Charlie Hearn
‘Not In Love’ is originally found on Crystal Castles’ second studio album Crystal Castles 2, which came out earlier this year. In the past, the duo from Ontario have been better known for their lo-fi home recordings and chaotic live shows than their radio friendly fodder, but with this single they seem to have successfully crossed over without sacrificing an ounce of credibility. The Cure’s Robert Smith is the dream collaborator for this emotionally charged tragedy, propelled into orbit by Ethan Kath’s master class in electronic production.
It’s an all round winner that strongly suggests there’s a place for Crystal Castles outside of the grubby clubs and scenester crowds that saw them banded around as the next big thing prior to their debut LP in 2008. For that very reason, diehard fans may well find themselves perplexed by a radical transformation that doesn’t see Alice Glass get a look in. But Smith’s radical reworking boasts an irresistible danceability that perhaps hasn’t been prevalent enough in Crystal Castles’ previous releases. In fact, we decalre anyone who doesn’t find their head nodding and heart racing by the time the final chorus reaches full throttle to be our friend no longer.
