Erase Errata – Damaged (Kill Rock Stars)

4/5

By: Charlie Hearn

You have to admire Erase Errata’s stamina, having managed to successfully survive a decade, something that’s no mean feat when you’ve gone through more line up changes than the Sugababes (ok, maybe that’s an exaggeration).  Still, the trio from San Francisco seem to go from strength to strength, hammering out their own brand of jittery punk music like a well oiled machine.  The old adage that what doesn’t kill you only makes you stronger seems to ring true for the girls who only seem to get better at harnessing their sound.

Latest offering ‘Damaged’ maintains all the parts that come customarily with an Erase Errata record – it’s a more than slightly chaotic melting pot of bass, drums and vocals; with a spot of trumpet thrown in for good measure.  However, towards the end we are treated to an extended break down reminiscent of some of the more experimental art that inspires Erase Errata and their belief in improvisation as a compositional tool.  It’s not itself particularly ground breaking, but if you’re already a fan of the band then you’re in for a treat and if you weren’t already aware of them, it’s a mighty introduction.  Those of us already acquainted with their charms will be delighted to hear that Erase Errata are just as good as we remember them being.
