Allo Darlin’ – My Heart is a Drummer (Fortuna Pop!)

3/5

By: Richard Brant

‘My Heart is A Drummer’ is tropically heartrending with bittersweet warmth as we slip further amidst these dull miserable autumn days. The fourth single from Allo Darlin’s self titled debut album follows the grain of playful sunshine drenched indie pop with the delightful Aussie twanged vocals of Elizabeth Morris coasting over the top.

I’m pretty sure ‘My Heart is A Drummer’ would be similar to the result of the splicing together of Paul Simon’s ‘You Can Call Me Al’ with Cyndi Lauper’s ‘Girls Just Want to Have Fun.’ The bouncing bass lines with melodic guitar rotations and chimes call to mind the former while the prominent vocalised tune has a notable tip of the hat to the latter.

The lyrics sift out the story of a complicated, perhaps even toxic relationship, undermining the sunny exterior. Commencing by saying a “farewell” to ones pride, due to the apparent notion of going back to a former lovers’ arms, a reminiscent wake up call kicks in looking back at the put downs and irritants that made life miserable. Even though there is still the nervous fluttering of love in “…and when you call me on the telephone my fingers will still twist through the chord…”  the previous memories seem to rouse an inner strength as Morris brightly declares “but I know that I’m stronger than you are.”

B-side is an acoustic version of ‘If Loneliness Was Art’ which certainly adds to the solitude, as the echo and stripped tune gives the impression of inner monologue looking on from afar.

‘My Heart is A Drummer’ is the kind of tune to lift one up on a cold autumn day, but it’s the back and forth emotive confusion in the lyrics that make it that bit more charming in its exposed vulnerability.
