The Futureheads – Christmas Was Better in the 80s (Nul)

4/5

By: Stan Morgan

The Futureheads recognise that Christmas singles are always full of rubbish clichés and cheesy melodies, but instead of trying to do anything different, they go for it full-on. Church bells? Check. Tra-la-las? Check. Lyrics about riding Santa’s sleigh and snowball fights? Double check. They even manage to throw in a bit of Handel’s ‘Messiah’ for good measure.

It starts on dodgy ground though. The opening sounds not unlike a Mackem Elton John ballad, before the band kick in with their trademark 1000 miles per hour guitar and get the festivities going.  Once they’re in gear, they deliver a song that’ll take you back to how it felt on Christmas Eve as a child (if you’re around 21 years of age or more), and you’ll end up smiling the whole way through, whether you feel like you really should or not.

If it was by any other band I’d probably be sitting here telling you how insufferable the whole thing is, but The Futureheads’ charm and wit manages to save it, and more than that makes it possibly the best indie Christmas single ever.  Well, since Fountains of Wayne’s impeccable ‘I Want An Alien For Christmas’, at least.
