Destroyer – Chinatown (Merge)

4/5

By: Stan Morgan

In terms of consistency and quality of output, Destroyer have been one of the most generous artists of recent times, averaging around one new release every year since the mid-90s. There are no signs of it stopping either - ‘Chinatown’ is our first taste of Destroyer’s forthcoming, tenth album, Kaputt.

Its gentle rhythms and boy/girl vocals put you in mind of fellow Canadians Stars, but without so much of a contrived literary feel (not that Destroyer head honcho Daniel Bejar is averse to being contrived, oh no). It may just be the name of the track, or maybe the combination of the sax and the smooth bass line, but you may just be reminded of the kind of music that would usually be found being played in the lavatories of a (high quality) Chinese restaurant. In a good way. Like, the best restaurant music ever.

Maybe Destroyer has managed to identify and exploit a gap in the market, or maybe it’s just a coincidence. What’s for sure is that from the strength of this track, Bejar’s next album will be anything but toilet.
