Amplifier - 'Amplifier' (Music For Nations)
2/5
By: Lauren Gallagher
Anyone looking to recall their memories of post-grunge; groping for any 'b-rate' ensemble to substitute their cravings for Seattle band days; look no farther.
Poor Amplifier. At first, 'Airborne' is promising. Its austere, goth intro warbles into an almost-Pumpkins state, but the anticipated apocalypse never occurs. In its place, one is left with droning, oft monotonous vocals, and a belated jam that attempts in earnest to save the latter third of the song's remainder. And it's this unfortunate pattern which befalls much of Amplifier's debut release, continually.
So, over and over, any tunes tease, offering snippets of a promising resonance, but fail to captivate. Technically proficient, Amplifier would probably make for an intriguing live intermingling, or apt come-down fodder. Yet, ironically, Amplifier's lyrics to 'Panzer' just simply say it best: 'It's the same, it's the same - the same song every time.'
