Liars - Proud Evolution EP (Mute)

5/5

By: Keri Kennedy

Generous boys, Liars - the third single form the seminal Sisterworld comes packaged with a remix by Thom Yorke (as featured on disc two of the LP), a rousing live rendition, and three additional non-album tunes.

‘Proud Evolution itself opens with a guitar sound spookily reminiscent of the intro of Yeah Yeah Yeah's ‘Rich’. It's a slow burner and has in no way the same thundering crescendo of previous single ‘Scissor’, but the similar haunting chanting vocal overlays and echoes remain over an almost disco beat, and do so to brilliant effect.

The same applies to the three extra tracks.  Indeed, for fans of the chaotic, thrashing Liars, this EP is the disturbing calm at the eye of the storm. ‘Come Now’ is an especially dark number with spectral guitars and keyboard building ominously towards its five minute completion -  it sounds more and more as if Thom Yorke could have had a part in its production too. ‘Total Frown’ is a diversion from the mellow with twanging guitar and sporadic jerky beats - the pace doesn't quicken, but the volume rises with crashing cymbals. ‘Strangers’ harks back to the They Were Wrong So We Drowned era – bass heavy, pretty wonky, and fades into some distorted vocals and shrieking violin sounds before coming to an abrupt end.

It's freakish and haunting, but as usual, it sees Liars bucking the trend with awesome results.  We’ve come to expect nothing less.
