Blood Red Shoes Light It Up (V2)

Famed for their raucous live performances and seemingly never-ending tour schedule, Brighton’s Blood Red Shoes, unites Laura-Mary Carter (vocals/guitar) and Steven Ansell (drums/vocals). Upon the collapse of their previous bands, the pair came together in 2004 to form what has become a rather enthusiastic punk-inspired and angst-ridden duo. Taking various underground punk and rock music as their main source of influence, Blood Red Shoes generate a sound that seamlessly alternates between gritty indie rock’n’roll and the softer territory of pop.
Taken from their second album, Fire Like This, ‘ Light It Up’ goes some way towards capturing the spirit and sheer enthusiasm of their live performances. In what Ansell describes as their “Pixies formula song,” the duo reproduces that famous brand of temperamental, authority-defying angst. Moulding punk and a much softer blend of indie guitar rock, the song makes sure you’re comfortable before thrusting you head-first into a heavily distorted and drum-thumping chorus, punctuated by the anthem-like yelps of “Light! It! Up!”
With their minimal and yet forceful approach, this is a prime example of the power of simplicity. Far from sounding bare, the duo continues to produce tracks that are complex and full-bodied enough to send them hurtling along. Craving “chaos, upheaval and destruction”, ‘Light It Up’ is decidedly grand, clean rock that reflects the continuing influence of the likes of Pixies and Sonic Youth. This is a direct, unhampered rock record that abandons polish for raw energy and immediacy.
