Gil Scott Heron – New York is Killing Me (Jamie xx Remix) (XL)

4/5

Jamie xx (of The xx fame in case you weren’t aware) has been a busy boy lately, coming out with his own impressive debut single ‘Far Nearer’, and pumping out remixes for the likes of Adele, Glasser and Jack Peñate. His most recent project has seen him produce a remix of every track on Gil Scott Heron’s most recent album I’m New Here, which he has cleverly titled We’re New Here.

Using only Gil Scott Heron’s vocals has allowed Jamie xx to conform to the trend in current dance music of using cut-up processed lyrics and placing them over a bass-heavy beat, a la pretty much every new producer you’re likely to have heard recently, but for the most part the exercise is a very successful one, creating a slowly evolving track that more than holds its own alongside most others out there, even though at one point it does sound a bit like he’s trying to put a Donk on it.

How the rest of the album fares is yet to be seen, but you feel it would do very well to consistently match the quality of this early taste.
