Caitlin Rose Learnin To Ride (Names)
4/5

If there’s one place in the world that’s synonymous with country music it’s Nashville, Tennessee (in my head I say that in a Southern accent, I can’t help it), so it’s not surprising that country’s new rising star, Caitlin Rose, is a Nashville native. Yet despite coming from such a rich country background, Rose has managed to avoid the usual clichés that surround the genre. Her debut album Own Side Now mixes together those traditional roots with a modern vibrancy that makes it totally relevant, helped in no small part by Rose’s exceptional voice.
The album’s opener ‘Learnin’ to Ride’ is no exception. While it may not be the best song on there, it provides the perfect introduction to the record, establishing from the outset her extraordinary talent for writing heartbreakingly beautiful songs.
As well as fitting perfectly within the album, ‘Learnin’ to Ride’ also stands up fantastically as a song in its own right. Light, upbeat and full of finger picking guitars that provide the perfect level of backing to let the vocals shine through, it’s wonderfully calming and engaging from beginning to end. Caitlin Rose is one of my favourite artists of this year and I would encourage anyone that hasn’t done so already to listen to Own Side Now, this single being the perfect starting point. I defy you not to fall in love.
