The Wave Pictures Johnny Helm Sings EP (Moshi Moshi)
4/5

It might be letting you in on too much, sure, but when this EP began with a song called 'Now You Are Pregnant' (with lyrics like “I don't need therapy because I have cigarettes, and I don't have any bad memories only bitter regrets”), it instantly found a place in my heart. It’s a tale about losing the girl you loved, the subsequent lifelong regrets that you never made your move and how you always thought her boyfriend was an asshole anyway. Heck, what’s not to like?
Such is The Wave Pictures’ style, said opener is a weepy, self-confessional long poem underpinned by some dreadfully pleasant guitar strumming, uncomplicatedly creating that refreshing feeling of spontaneity. ‘First though, best thought’ and all that – it really feels like ‘Pregnant’, and indeed this whole EP, wasn’t written so much as it was laid down as soon as they thought of it. And somehow, that works a treat.
The following 'Sleepy Eye' is a quiet little love song about being bored and in love with nothing to do with your day, and it’s lovely despite its deliberately slightly sleepy feel. The meaning of 'The Rev Gary Davis' however we shall leave up to you to decide – it’s raw anger is actually quite confusing (“f**k you and f**k your friends” go the lyrics), but it’s rather welcome all the same.
Oh, and the title refers to the fact it's the drummer of the band, Johnny Helm, singing all the way through. Just in case there was any confusion about that. He does a pretty good job of it too.
