iLiKETRAiNS He Who Saw The Deep (iLR)

The fact that I share the same passion as band member David Martin (I, also, like trains) was a promising start to a relationship which I hoped would further blossom. I considered the other things which David and I might have in common. Perhaps he liked Dolcelatte and Bacon sandwiches too, the sound of an autumn leaf crunching under his foot, or maybe our shared loves even went as far as him having a strange fascination with palindromes? “Was it a car or a cat i saw”! Ahh, I ask you...
When my feet were up on the sofa and the first notes of He Who Saw The Deep made their way from the speakers to my years, it became quickly apparent that this blossoming relationship had ended before it had even started. Like a divorce before a marriage, if I’m to quote one of iLiKETRAiNS’ track titles.
He Who Saw The Deep is a fifty minute long, thoroughly sombre affair with too much in the way of over elaborate attempts at creating a melancholic ambience. It’s very reliant on its slowly played cellos and violins over piano sequences and deep voiced vocals gloomily delivering lines like “your heart will have a hard time not melting in our arms.” Well, David, I’m afraid my heart will have to shrivel up and remain cold like a stone if it means not having to melt in the manner you describe.
The biggest offenders are tracks like ‘Sea of Regrets’, ‘Hope Is Not Enough’, and ‘Progress Is A Snake’, each one being downtrodden enough to bring a gulp to your throat causing you to choke, and even go as far as to prompt tears to fall from ones face and onto one’s keyboard / cup of tea. Something no one wants.
But if you are the kind who often indulges in a tear-filled beverage, or Schindler’s List, or getting photos of your ex out, you should still beware – He Who Saw The Deep doesn’t offer any light at the end of your curious little tunnel.
