Jagga – Modern Day Romance (Puregroove)

2/5

By: Theo Krekis

Over the past year, a whole host of electronic pop artists have found their way on to our radios, bringing with them toned down elements of various genres such as electronica and dubstep, their material falling far short of what well produced and innovative beats from these styles should, and indeed one day did, resemble.

Unfortunately, Jagga’s ‘Modern Day Romance’ is at the forefront of this issue.  It’s an unnecessarily overly produced single which relies heavily on the roaring bass line and voice at the end of each chorus shouting out ‘whoa oh oh whoa’s which actually sound more like an intoxicated lager lout at a football match as opposed to a professional vocalist.  The accompanying ‘Keep On The Light’ is a slowed down number, masquerading again as a dubstep track, but again falling short of the mark due to poor structuring and production.

Since dubstep first came up from the underground, I’ve always felt that vocals just get in the way of the music, apart from with the likes of Space Ape and Flowdan who deliver their dense spoken word passages over a chest shattering bass line to great effect.  But to have a verse, chorus, verse, chorus over structure a dubstep beat, to me, seems ludicrous when so much more can be done within what it still an exciting medium.

Ludicrous, yes... but seemingly not unpopular.
