Creep – Days [feat. Romy Croft of The xx] (XL)

4/5

By: Samuel Smith

Stepping up to the hype crease (cricket reference) – and bringing with them The xx’s gauze-voiced Romy Croft - we have recent XL signings Creep.

Whilst the whole 'witch-house' non genre thing was cooked up by synth-terror band Salem to describe their spooky electronics and deep, cavernous sound, ‘Days’ is a far more direct affair, like they've bulked up the weedy frame of early noughties garage with a thick sweat of reverse-reverbed guitars and swollen dirty synths.

Yet for all this, it's Romy's breathless vocals that bind everything together, the way she enunciates every word as if she only thought to utter them at the end of a deep exhalation. Even though the words are pure cheap nonsense - "I only dream of you / you say that I am untrue" - the waifish texture of her voice assures that the emotive sense of the words is enacted with far more power than language could.
