M.I.A. – Bad Girls (Self Released)

4/5

By: Elliott Quantrill

With M.I.A. releasing her new Vicki Leekx mix tape as a free download, its aim presumably being to rebuild broken barriers after what can be called a difficult 2010, lead cut ‘Bad Girls’ signals that she’s entering 2011 with a fresh new outlook. Despite a troubled last year, M.I.A.’s ability as a songwriter and performer, ever growing skill in music production and knack for combining a variety of genres clearly hasn’t left her entirely.

‘Bad Girls’, as we should expect, finds M.I.A. speaking her mind.  And though on last year’s /\/\/\Y/\ some of that vitriol was lost in the muddy production, this could be the start of a return to form – the message here (“live fast, die young, bad girls do it well!”) is never lost despite being part of a huge array of sounds that range from Missy Elliott-influenced hip hop to Indian Bangra.
