Dave I.D. Gangs EP (!K7/Off The Uncertain Button)
3/5

In today’s culture, where Twitter, Facebook and their ability to generate hype reign supreme, releasing music and have any form of impact without a significant online presence is almost unthinkable. But that’s what Dave I.D. has managed to do. I know, no Twitter, can you imagine?
London based David Hedges’ new EP hasn’t had the hype of some other releases around at the moment, allowing the listener to embark upon it with a clear head and no pre-conceived ideas about how it should sound, a surprisingly refreshing experience. This is probably for the best, as it would be somewhat impossible to imagine what Gangs would sound like just by reading 140 character summaries. Throughout its 5 tracks the EP borrows from electro, grime, hip-hop, dance, punk and produces a whole manner of noises that can’t really be categorised.
Opening with cacophony of noise on ‘Only Me I Can Save’, Dave I.D. automatically establishes Gangs as something unique. It provides something of a high point on the EP, with Hedges’ almost haunting vocals providing an antidote to the immense distortion going on. There are moments, however, when this noise and amalgamation of influences becomes fairly messy. The ending of ‘X-F’, is so heavy with distortion and off beat synths and other stock electro beeps that it’s almost not worth powering through it. Thankfully though, it’s followed by ‘Lights’ which begins with a stark, lone drum beat and is joined by some wonderfully interesting synths and again Hedges’ minimalist vocals provide an interesting balance to the noise.
