Poino – Moan Loose (Horse Arm)

3/5

By: Stephen Maughan

Remember that time the school bullies spun you around on the merry-go-round? You screamed from them to stop, but they just kept spinning you faster. Your vision became blurry, ‘til you couldn't make out the tree's from the bullies anymore. Your head felt like an out of control rollercoaster, and you knew any moment you would be sick all over your expensive new shoes. You started to cry, at which point they got bored with tormenting you, and headed off to  terrorize someone else. Once you stumbled off the merry-go-round, so dizzy you couldn’t keep your balance, you tumbled over. The strange thing is, despite feeling disorientated, sick and confused, you kind of liked it. Moan Loose is all about recapturing that feeling of yesteryear.

After forming five years ago, Poino have finally got around to releasing their debut album, a collection of ten songs with intriguing titles like ‘Watching the Kitchen Spider’ and ‘Strength of a Cowboy’ that rattle and roll to the sounds of early American underground hardcore with a splash of the eccentricity of The Fall.

It reminds me of the kind of howling lyrics and swirling guitar music you might find on the Thurston Moore-run Ecstatic Peace record label, and captures perfectly that line between experimentalism, clever and noisy rock without becoming annoying or repetitive as many records of this type can do.

It's what they use to call good, clean, honest fun. But be careful of Poino’s merry-go-round, it's fun to be dizzy, but adjusting to normal life again when you get off can take a while.
