Yuck Yuck (Mercury)
3/5
By: Matt Tomiak
The eponymous debut from Yuck, the band that emerged from the dissolution of briefly-touted North London youngsters Cajun Dance Party with an even more outre name, is a record that's hard to dislike.
These 12 breezy tracks are mostly in thrall to the US lo-fi/slacker rock of yesteryear - chiefly, Pavement ('Get Away','Suck'') Sleater-Kinney ('The Wall') and The Lemonheads ('Shook Down'and the wobbly 'Georgia', a duet whose charming vocal interplay between Daniel and Ilana Blumberg recalls that of Evan Dando and Juliana Hatfield in most agreeable fashion.)
Yuck don't solely sound like bands who existed before they were born, though: 'Suidide Policeman' is as lovely as The Shins' best work. Yuck might dispay their influences just a little too overbearingly, but there's an easy, tumble-down charm to this LP that's hard to resist.
