Pet Moon – Blessing Force Warehouse Party, Oxford – 12/2/11

4/5

By: Liane Escorza

Pet Moon is one-man band Andrew Mears, ex-front man of Youthmovies and a man who also had a role in the early days of Foals.  Presuming you have heard at least of one of these bands, it will suffice to say that even if his musical direction has changed, his forceful and fierce energy has not. There’s no room for hesitation in Pet Moon’s world. It’s  ‘go-go-go’ from the start, sweeping the audience along either in admiration or in overwhelmed surprise.

Recently, Pet Moon’s music has turned more psychedelic and electro/dance-oriented than before. The bass is heavy, the guitars metallic and Andrew’s singing pure, soft and expanding. There is no denying that his vocal skills and strong stage presence blend into these splinters of pop, brushes of R&B and nostalgic 80s disco eagerly and effortlessly.

It is a shame that tonight the PA is small and not working at full speed. The consequences of this result in microphones going off and a muffled guitar; the ‘umpfh’ effect of his grand bass and drilling beat is lost on ‘Omen Pot’ and ‘Impossible Muscle’, and so the strongest song of the night becomes his otherwise gentle acoustic ballad ‘Ganger’. Still, Pet Moon enthrals and excites. He personifies vision and a forward-thinking attitude, and is one of those acts that leave you gasping for a token that will allow you to read the future of new and thrilling musical prospects.
