Maps & Atlases – Living Decoration (Fat Cat)

4/5

By: Richard Brant

A strange circling sound opens ‘Living Decoration,’ almost like a skipping rope whirling around your head. Before you can work out what it is the song kicks in with Dave Davison’s trademark strained vocals nipping straight in to say “We’ve been living decorations, and I’m sad to say, to get another place now, we’ve found seamless today.”

Perhaps it’s a song of moving on with a heavy heart, or perhaps a song of new beginnings... the lyrics in their entirety aren’t exactly forthcoming. What I can say though is that Maps & Atlases have made a tune that preserves their slightly odd progressive sound, yet brings enough structure and melody to appeal to all.

The lead guitar dances over the top of the pulsating drums for the main tune before a slight refrain with guitar stabs leading in to a stair like vocal, moving down in steps. They even find time to throw in an afrobeat bridge before everything drops away leaving xylophone chimes and a solitary drum beat to take you to the end. It’s intriguing, but more to the point, it’s good clean fun.
