Burial, Four Tet & Thom Yorke – Mirror (Text)

3/5

By: Stan Morgan

Burial, Four Tet and Thom Yorke are undoubtedly three of the most exciting IDM artists around, each having made a landmark electronica album in the past few years. A collaboration has the potential to be pretty spectacular, then.

On ‘Mirror’ the three wise men have come bearing gifts, each bringing an element of their signature sound. There are some off-kilter drums courtesy of Four Tet, plenty of wob-wobs from Burial, and Thom Yorke’s unmistakable vocals (as well as some of Jonny Greenwood’s favourite instrument, the ondes martenot, if I’m not mistaken).

Yet sadly the whole is let down by the quality of its parts. Four Tet’s drums are predictable, Burial’s wob-wobs are uninspiring and Thom Yorke’s vocals are extremely lacklustre. You get the feeling each artist is saving their best work for their own projects, meaning that ultimately the track is pretty disappointing, but not bad.
