Gang Gang Dance - Glass Jar (4AD)

4/5

By: Stan Morgan

Gang Gang Dance got some unexpected publicity last year when it turned out Florence and the Machine had ripped them off on ‘Rabbit Heart (Raise It Up)’. Time for Gang Gang Dance to follow that up with an all-conquering dance floor smash then? No.

Instead, ’Glass Jar’ takes a while to get going, the best part of four minutes in fact, but luckily there’s still 8 minutes of interesting stuff crammed in behind it, as if to reward your tolerance of the intro. Acrobatic synths and bass drones eventually meld in with a propulsive drum beat, coming across a bit like what Fuck Buttons probably sound like underneath all the distortion, with steel drums and a calypso bass line all adding to the fun.

There’s enough variation and knob-twiddling to keep the track interesting until the end, where the party’s ended by a rather abrupt fade-out. You’re left wanting more, despite the track being well over 11 minutes in length, and that alone is worth a 4/5.
