The Shoes Crack My Bones (Southern Fried)

When the words ‘French’ and ‘electro’ appear in the same sentence, chances are you’re about to stumble across something magnificent (‘French’ and ‘rock’ is far more likely to be fraught with danger). From Daft Punk to Justice to Cassius to a list of other coffee drinking, Marlboro Red smoking electro heads... J’aime le jambon!
Which brings me on to the subject at hand, The Shoes. Despite joining the flood of “The” bands with somewhat incredulous and thoroughly unimaginative names, they’ve admirably gotten to the stage of releasing a debut LP, Crack My Bones.
When I first came across them, I was impressed with their display of artistic flare in distributing each copy of their limited edition 7” Knock Out with a Polaroid picture of their famous friends’ shoes. From rock stars to pop stars to DJ’s, all wearing an array of different plims, high tops and stilettos, we got to see what people with more money than us wore on their feet. For perhaps the first time ever.
Crack My Bones is a pithy ten track record, written with a list of other musicians such as Cock N Bull Kid, Esser, The Bewitched Hands and Wave Machines. It starts bloody well, too - opening tracks ‘Stay The Same’ and ‘Close Your Eyes’, are catchy numbers with electro filled melodies, indie pop style vocals and elongated futuristic synth sounds which did more than wet my palette.
Unfortunately ‘Cliche’, featuring Cock N Bull Kid failed in its delivery and sounded more like Lady Gaga collaborating with R2-D2 on a B-sides. Thankfully, it’s a sin that’s easily redeemed with ‘Time To Dance’ - the track which stood out the most, with its somewhat peculiar piano melody played over a rapid dance beat and a bass line bearing a resemblance to The Gossip’s ‘Standing In The Way Of Control’, and a chorus I found difficult to resist, so decided not to bother.
Bravo Garcons!
