The Mendoza Line - 'Fortune' (Cooking Vinyl)

4/5

By: Samantha Hall

The Mendoza Line - 'Fortune'Unashamedly woozy; as high as toddlers on Pritt Stick.

The Dylan-inspired, folksy American drawl-gang take a flight back to Londres with their fifth album release to date. This time on offer, we have amidst the stoner/country blues more serious thematic, witty lyrical banter. 'Fortune' forms of narrative tales of Americans travelling abroad in 2003, and the perspectives of immigrants coming to the States' fair shores in this contemporary day and age.

Sounds rather monotonous - yeah well, the dusty road-tripping vibe is definitely prominent throughout the whole album, but somehow refreshingly so. Distinctly Yankee keyboards and slide-guitar prompt you to start searching around for the baccy and cowboy boots, but if you open your mind a touch and stumble past the fact you may be enjoying this hideous genre that is dubbed 'Western' you may find yourself in for quite a treat.

Being unashamedly talented in their craft combined with buoyant good humour dub The Mendoza Line masters in the art of making enjoyable (whisper it) easy-listening. It may not be gen-u-ine and authentic to the ground, but cross-pollination and a wilful disregard to convention surely is what makes for the purest music - perhaps not the coolest, or even most authentic, but definitely the most worthy on the eardrums.
