Wet Paint Woe (Records Records Records)
4/5

Whether they intend to be part of it or not, Wet Paint have been making some of the best music in the current revival of love for all things Sonic Youth, Pavement, Dinosaur Jr prevalent in UK indie over the last few years. But mere apery is not their only merit.
It’s because of their true indie-rock credentials, their inescapably strong skills at song craft and their catchy yet raw riffs that Wet Paint have become something of a cult band in their own right. Woe is their second album, and it is brilliant.
Its highlights are many, but here are three - ‘Uptight Casuals’, a car journey head banger, the more reserved ‘Distant Memory’ with its subtly engaging build-up of dissonant chords, and ‘Aim Low’, a song stripped to its shivering core of softly spoken vocals and gentle guitar.
Alas, ‘Shadow’s Secret Life’ follows a similar ethic of introspection but is probably the weakest of the lot. Yet this small misstep is quickly solved by the thoroughly impressive ‘Little Disappointments’, which, to one’s surprise, does not develop as its infectious intro might predict - its twists and changes are both unexpected and a joy, a wonder in labyrinthine shapes; a tease to the senses.
Husker Du and Sebadoh fans: Wow the Woe.
