Battles - Ice Cream (Warp)

4/5

By: Stan Morgan

It’s going to be very difficult for Battles to reach the heights of their insanely-good debut Mirrored with new album Gloss Drop, with many listeners eagerly waiting to unleash the backlash in the wake of the band having to cope with the departure of their front man Tyondai Braxton.

‘Ice Cream’ is the band laughing in the face of any assumptions they might be under pressure to perform on their follow-up, cranking up the fun factor and sounding like they’re bloody loving it. They’ve roped in Matias Aguayo to contribute to this track, providing completely unintelligible vocal sounds, presumably deeming real words surplus to requirements, as the rest of the band bounce around like they’re stuck in a popcorn machine.

It’s by no means their best work to date, but unlike many of their contemporaries in the math-pop circuit, they’ve once again made a song that is guaranteed to put a smile on your face.
