Twin Sister - Bad Street (Domino)

4/5

By: Stan Morgan

Long Island’s Twin Sister have offered us this, ‘Bad Street’, as a first taste of what is to come on their debut album, due out in September on Domino Records.

Distinctly funkier than anything from their EPs Colour Your Life and Vampires With Dreaming Kids, the track revolves around a bass groove, with guitar and synth stabs interlocking with a robotic drum beat while diminutive singer Andrea Estella repeatedly purrs “I want it bad” in a style that’s more likely to make the casual listener believe she was from Scandinavia rather than New York.

Despite a shift in groove halfway through the track, interest levels trail off towards the end as the beat treads the line between funky and monotonous, perhaps suggesting ‘Bad Street’ would benefit from having a minute or so cut out somewhere. Despite this, there’s no bad taste left in your mouth, and this demonstration of the band’s scope for diversity on their debut looks promising.
