Gang Gang Dance - MindKilla [Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry Remix] (4AD)

4/5

By: Stan Morgan

Gang Gang Dance’s Eye Contact is fast becoming one of the front-runners for the Album of 2011 crown, with ‘MindKilla’ being one of its standout tracks.

One of the many people to have taken record of the album is Jamaican dub reggae pioneer Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry, who has taken the track and, perhaps not surprisingly, completely turned it on its head.

Gone are the pseudo-dancehall rhythms, replaced by dub riddims and Perry’s ranting about fat police and rats, while Lizzi Bougatsos’ vocals of the original are cut up and spread liberally about the track’s eight minutes.  It’s a little bit mad, but brilliant at the same time, much like Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry himself, and unlike most remixes out there it actually adds something worthwhile to the original.

It’s very likely that Gang Gang Dance will approve of it (stop press – they do), as LSP probably features highly amongst their endless list of influences.  If you’ve got any sense you’ll approve too.
