Bjork – Crystalline (One Little Indian)

4/5

By: Stan Morgan

For the last few years, Bjork has been one of the names dropped most often when investigating an artist’s influences. Everyone from Bat for Lashes to Glasser to Fever Ray has been compared to the diminutive Icelander in one way or another that it’s almost been easy to forget Bjork still makes music of her own.

‘Crystalline’ is the first single to be released from her forthcoming album Biophilia, and it’s a timely reminder that however many imitators there may be, no one quite comes close to Bjork in terms of innovation.

The track is built around mirrored glockenspiel lines, with a familiar-sounding hollow bass pulse, and drums that sound suspiciously like something Linkin Park might have come up with. The lack of structure is disorientating at first, but once you are drawn in, and the hypnotic nature of the melodies and rhythms sink in to your brain, you’re gently guided to the end of the…OH HANG ON THERE’S A DRUM N BASS BIT. Yes. The last minute or so is reserved for a rather alarmingly loud D’n’B outro.  But it’s Bjork, we should have known it would be coming all along. She’s back.
