Metronomy New Slang @ The Hippodrome, Kingston 23/6/11

Translating the mellowed-out, seaside jauntiness of The English Riviera to the sweaty, claustrophobic, clubbish confines of Kingston Hippodrome’s stalwart indie night New Slang must’ve caused Metronomy some serious head-scratching. Though presumably, not for long as the answer they come up with is about as simple as rock ‘n’ roll can be: play it fast and play it loud.
It’s an effective strategy that sees the charm and kookiness of songs like ‘Some Written’, ‘Corinne’ and ‘We Broke Free’ converted into fuzzed-up floor-fillers that stand-up alongside earlier hits ‘Holiday’ and ‘Heartbreaker’, which, too, do their part in making the crowd go nuts. Tonight’s airing of ‘The Bay’ brings the summery-ness of the South West Coast whilst keeping everyone’s feet moving, and ‘The Look’ confirms just how good at hooks – reigned in or full-blown – this band is.
So, Metronomy have tonight proved that theirs is a bow multi-strung: able to oscillate from beach-based bucolia on record to sweat-stained raucousness live. Of course, those there (and those who’ve had the pleasure of seeing them live before) will know that a few blinking lights strapped to their chests can never be a bad thing either.
