The Briefs - 'Off The Charts' (Bitzcore)
3/5
By: Matt Tomiak

The sleeve bears more than just a passing resemblance to 'Never Mind The Bollocks'. There's a track called 'Piss On The Youth'. There's even an ultra-bad taste homage ('Looking Through Gary Glitter's Eyes') to The Adverts' 1976 hit 'Gary Gilmore's Eyes'...
Yep, the dozen two-and-a-half-minute, 2-fingered salutes that comprise The Brief's second LP show old-school punk rock in all its obnoxious, gobby glory.
Despite hailing from Seattle, The B's are clearly far more enamoured with the brittle, melodic headache sound of the British first wave of the late-70s than their own closer-to-home grunge heritage. It's all utterly derivative, but there are entertaining moments; the unpatriotic Ramones-esque sneer of 'We Americans' and the shouty nihilism of 'Ain't It The Truth' in particular, yet there's still the overriding, nagging notion that this really isn't an art its creators would die for...
But that's modern-day punk for you.
