Big Deal – Chair (EMI)

4/5

By: Josh Daniel

A winsome young boy meets an enthusiastic young girl and everything falls into place... Well, at least that's how they tell it. Alice and Kacey formed the twosome of Big Deal in London in 2010 after their previous band ventures fell apart. They already have a handful of impressive tracks that posit themselves somewhere on the brink of adulthood, either as mature teenagers or uncomfortable, confused adults.

Latest single 'Chair' sees them growing in confidence still. Coming across as a sober Best Coast, they are also devoid of any percussion, allow the plaintive guitar and microscopic vocals to shine through. Their bombastic moniker, perhaps a sarcastic joke, is certainly at odds with the intimacy of the lyrics. With lines such us “Wanna be your lover, trying hard to be your friend” they comment on dysfunctional relationships with a sense of maturity, and the simple structure of acoustic versus electric guitar across verse and chorus is simple yet extremely effective. A fuzzy but concisely constructed treat.
