M83 – Midnight City (EMI)

5/5

By: Josh Daniel

French sky enthusiast Anthony Gonzalez returns here, after a 3 year hiatus from M83's 80s tribute Saturdays=Youth. It'd be unlike him to have his sights set on anything but 'panoramic scope' and thankfully 'Midnight City' from forthcoming LP Echoes is no letdown.

Everything you'd expect is present: full bodied keys, massive drums and a throbbing bass as familiar as it is engaging.  Even a wonderfully anachronistic sax solo (reminiscent of The Beloved's 'Sweet Harmony') towards the end only adds to the overall effect, and hints that his previous nods towards 80s and early 90s electronica weren't merely a fling.

A joyous if nostalgia tinged track, it's a welcome return from the king of modern shoegaze.
