New Look – The Ballad (!K7 Records)

4/5

By: Josh Daniel

Pretty, youthful boy/girl twosome New Look, from Canada via inumerable capital cities, come equipped with a seemingly effortless cool. Their spacious sound is like a summer breeze, subtly cooling the back of your neck. It's unobtrusive, light, immediate and memorable.

With a shape and structure to their sound that would otherwise suggest some kind of epic dub/dance crossover, it presents itself as a more sincere, un-ironic Hurts with a latent “message to someone we know” set amongst the calls to “come out of the dark.” Somewhere amongst the vocal harmonies and swelling, caught-in-the-breeze synths lies a fleeting, slightly spooky message to a lost acquaintance.

Longer, and wider in scope than their earlier poppier tracks, 'The Ballad' has left me intrigued to see if they can continue in this vein on their upcoming !K7 releases. This Berlin based label, known for their 'DJ Kicks' series - where artists compile their favourite tracks, showing off their ever so eclectic tastes – should be a fitting home for this genre bending, world weary duo.
