The Smith Westerns – End of the Night (Domino)
2/5
By: Josh Daniel
3 piece glam-garage outfit The Smith Westerns are musicians from Midwestern USA. This track, the third single from album Dye On Blonde, comes flying out of the blocks, energetic, ready to take you on a whirlwind Saturday night out, where “everybody wants to be a star.” This initial burst hints towards Girls-level slackerdom, but instead the evening begins to wane and the night takes a turn for the worse.
Their respective young age soon gives them away, and despite the inoffensive backing track (although the very notion is offensive) the lyrics are tawdry and tired, with weak rhymes and the odd, exasperated “oh, girl” not enough to save it from the brink. In the end it sounds awfully like a cast-off b-side to Orson's 'Bright Idea'.
Due to tour alongside Arctic Monkeys and The Vaccines later this year, there is, however still plenty of time for them to improve this watered down garage rock, here at least, at risk of diluting anything else they come into contact with.
