Darren Hayman – I Know I Fucked Up / Who Hung The Monkey? (Moshi Moshi)
4/5
By: Josh Daniel
This 'cottage industry style release' (complete with hand painted vinyl) sees Darren Hayman (ex Hefner) release a double A side side from his January songs project, writing a song for each day of the month.
'I Know I Fucked Up' is a painfully honest attempt at closure on a dysfunctional, possibly deluded relationship. "You were the best friend I almost had" sings Elizabeth Morris (of Allo' Darlin) with a resigned and defeatist attitude, lost in the afterglow of a closeness that still remains. With talk of plastic breaking easily, the matter-of-fact wording is unsexy, and subsequently there's a vacant house style of emotion to which many could relate.
AA side, The Wave Pictures collaboration 'Who Hung the Monkey?' is a delightful counterpoint, even its sweetspot isn't quite as hard hitting as '...Fucked Up'. Hayman's enjoyable tales of UK travel, from Shooter's Green to Hampstead Heath, with the tongue in cheek pinpoint guitar assistance from the 'Pictures is never less than entertaining, echoing Bill Bryson with a surreliast, everyday edge.
In summary a delicious slice of homespun, idiosyncratic wisdom.
