The War On Drugs Slave Ambient
3/5

Classic Americana and expansive, Wilco-esqe alt-country are at the heart of The War On Drugs’ second album, although the Philadelphia trio who once counted Kurt Vile amongst their number don’t allow a deference towards classic AOR doesn’t to preclude some interesting detours here.
Sure, vocalist Adam Granduciel’s admiration of Bob Dylan is pretty clear from the off, and ‘Your Love Is Calling My Name’ is a near-identical musical retread of Tom Petty’s ‘Runnin’ Down A Dream’. The Springsteen-fronting-a-garage-band vibe that’s served Arcade Fire so well over the past few years also plays a substantial role in TWOD’s sound too.
That said, it’d hardly be fair to peg the band as mere retro-fetishists. ‘Slave Ambient’ includes a gratifying drone-rock interlude, ‘The Animator’, and ‘Come To The City’ features all the key components of The Jesus & Mary Chain– crashing drums, lacerating guitars and a petulant Jim Reid vocal sneer.
