Tom Waits – Bad As Me (Anti)

4/5

By: Stan Morgan

His forthcoming record Bad as Me is the first album’s worth of new material from Tom Waits since 2004’s Real Gone, and although his profile will have been further increased not least by The Wire in those years, it seems not much has changed in his music.

The drums sound like they’re being played on dustbin lids, the horns honk away and Waits’ trademark wail hasn’t changed one bit. Lyrically the song is typically ambiguous and unsettling, with Waits offering up a stream of curious metaphors before the accusatory chorus of “You’re the same kind of bad as me”.

His channelling of age old genres like blues and rock and roll gives the song a paradoxically refreshing sound compared to most music being released at the moment, this number sounding like it should be played in an American roadhouse in the 50s rather than on an iPhone. It’s more of the same, but that’s what we all wanted anyway.
