Charlotte Gainsbourg - Terrible Angels EP (Because)
3/5
By: Stan Morgan

The Terrible Angels EP is a sample of what we can expect from Charlotte Gainsbourg’s forthcoming Stage Whisper double-album, one disc of live recordings, and one of unreleased studio tracks, which promises collaborations with Beck, Villagers, Noah & The Whale and Connan Mockasin.
Of the four tracks on the EP the first two are studio tracks, opener ‘Terrible Angels’ is a stomping glam rock tune with a Goldfrappish synth bass line that feels like it’s trying to peel your skin away from your skeleton. The following ‘Memoir’ is an acoustic number which sounds limp next to the previous song, but in another context might be quite a pleasant little number.
Of the two live tracks it’s ‘IRM’ from the album of the same name that stands out, even though Gainsbourg’s voice sounds a little shaky in places, with the other live number being a cover of Bob Dylan’s ‘Just Like A Woman’ that while not terrible, doesn’t do anything to stop itself being slightly forgettable. It leaves the EP being something that fans will want to hear, but of little interest to anyone else.
