Real Estate - It’s Real (Domino)

4/5

By: Stan Morgan

If you’d never heard of Real Estate before, you might be forgiven for thinking that Real Estate’s ‘It’s Real’ could be an early 90s rap collective with their debut hit single – so retro hip hop is that title. Luckily for us it’s not, and chances are you’re already familiar with Real Estate’s excellent self-titled debut album.

‘It’s Real’ has a higher tempo than anything on their debut, but continues in the same style nonetheless, with jangly guitars and Shins-esque melodies encased in an infectiously laid-back attitude. There are suggestions that the band have learnt a few tricks from The Strokes after covering ‘Barely Legal’ for a recent compilation, with a bass line that could easily have been borrowed from Is This It, and a similar drum pattern in the “whoooaa whooooaa whoooaaa” chorus.

On this evidence the band’s forthcoming second album, simply titled Days, could be a real peach, and without a pair of baggy trousers or oversized clock necklace in sight.
