Tom Waits - Back in the Crowd (Anti)
4/5
By: Stan Morgan
Tom Waits’ latest offering from his (about) twelfth studio album is a lot easier on the ear than ‘Bad as Me’, released earlier in the year. In contrast to that song’s honking brass and Waits’ wailing over the top, ‘Back in the Crowd’ is as smooth as they come, with gently picked acoustic guitars and Waits going into mega-croon mode.
The track could easily have been picked out of a 60s ballad compilation, sitting alongside Nancy Sinatra or Matt Monro, which is perhaps not company that Tom Waits would usually keep, but he pulls it off very convincingly. It’s pretty safe to assume that there won’t be much more music like this released this year, and for that reason alone ‘Back in the Crowd’ deserves to be applauded, if only for being pleasantly free of wob-wobs.
